Linux has a funny talent for turning simple things into philosophical wars.

The main place to get Flatpak apps is Flathub.

Snap: Better Than the Hate, But Not Always My First Choice

Snap is the most controversial of the three.

Some people hate it because it is associated with Canonical and Ubuntu.

Some hate the centralized Snap Store model.

Some hate the startup performance.

Some hate automatic updates.

Some hate that Ubuntu pushes Snaps for certain apps.

Some hate it because the internet told them to hate it and they never checked why.

There are real criticisms.

There is also a lot of lazy tribalism.

Snap is not useless. It solves real problems.

Snaps bundle application dependencies. They can be installed across many Linux distributions. They update automatically. They support different confinement modes. They can also package services and command-line tools, not just desktop apps.

This makes Snap interesting in areas where Flatpak is less focused.

Flatpak is very desktop-app oriented.

Snap is more general-purpose.

Where Snap Is Good

For example, some vendors provide official Snap packages because it gives them one distribution path across Linux.

For users on Ubuntu, Snap is already part of the default experience.

If you are using Ubuntu and everything you need works fine as a Snap, you do not need to remove Snap just because Linux YouTube comments are angry.

That said, you should understand what you are using.

Snap Confinement: Strict, Classic, and Devmode

Some people do not like that.

The third is desktop integration.

Snap desktop apps have improved, but on non-Ubuntu distributions I usually prefer Flatpak for GUI apps unless the Snap version is clearly better.

The fourth is perception.

A lot of Linux users simply do not trust Snap. Sometimes for good reasons. Sometimes because the discourse around Snap became a meme.

Snap Best Use Case

Use Snap when:

  • you are on Ubuntu and the app works well as a Snap

I would not choose Snap as my default app format on every distro.

AppImage is the simplest concept.

Download one file.

Make it executable.

Run it.

No installation. No package manager. No repository. No system-wide changes.

That is the appeal.

For some users, AppImage is perfect.

You keep one app in a folder. You run it when needed. You delete it when you do not need it anymore.

AppImage is great when you want control and portability.

It is also useful when the developer only provides an AppImage.

A lot of smaller projects provide AppImage because it is relatively easy for users to understand.

“Download this file and run it” is much easier to explain than distro-specific package instructions.

Where AppImage Is Weak

AppImage has weaknesses.

The biggest one: it is usually not a full app management system.

You download files manually. You update them manually unless the AppImage supports update mechanisms or you use a third-party AppImage manager. Desktop integration may require extra tools. Sandboxing is not built into the format in the same strong default way people expect from Flatpak.
